Can I Drink Through a Straw With Invisalign?

Invisalign are transparent and removable braces that let you align your teeth without having to deal with braces that are not so appealing. This state-of-the-art alternative to braces is custom-made for every patient and can be worn by teenagers and adults alike. With Invisalign, you can go out and party or play sports with friends without anyone noticing that you have braces on your teeth.

But every good thing comes with a cost, and the same is with Invisalign. You are required to wear Invisalign for no less than 22 hours in a day, and you can not eat or drink with Invisalign on you. Food and drinks, except water, can stain our braces, damage our aligners, etc.

People find it uncomfortable to keep removing their braces whenever they have to drink anything; hence a lot of people ask the question, “can I drink through a straw with Invisalign?” We will answer this question in this article.

Drinking Liquid Through Straw While Wearing Invisalign

Water is the safest drink you can have with your Invisalign intact inside your mouth. Any other drink can warp the plastic and cause stains. But if you feel the need to drink something apart from water, then follow the below instructions:

  • Let the drink come down to lukewarm or room temperature so that it can not harm your braces.
  • Use a straw for drinking the liquid, as straws allow the liquid to bypass your aligners and teeth (though it is virtually impossible to avoid any kind of contact between the liquid and your aligners.)
  • Drink only clear drinks through a straw. It is best to avoid colas and fruit juices.
  • Once you have finished drinking, rinse your mouth with plenty of water. This will help remove sugar and pigments from your drink.
  • If you are going out for an event, then carry a travel toothbrush and paste with you. Try to brush your teeth as often as you can, especially after you have had a drink. Take out your Invisalign aligners while brushing them, as this way, you can better avoid tartar and plaque buildup.

If it is unavoidable to have a drink while you are out and you do not wish to remove your Invisalign retainers, then drinking from a straw is the best option. You must ensure that the liquid is not very hot and avoid colored drinks like colas and coffee. You should also rinse your mouth with lots of water after drinking to avoid stains. However, it is generally recommended to take out your retainers while drinking anything except water.
